There are many versions of this French recipe, named after the Russian royal family. This one is luscious.
Wash if necessary, dry thoroughly, hull, and slice lengthwise into a shallow bowl:
1 1/2 pounds ripe strawberries
Sprinkle over them:
1 cup fresh orange juice
2 tablespoons sugar
Stir gently to mix. Cover and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours.
Whip until soft peaks form:
1/2 cup cold heavy cream
Cover and refrigerate for up to 2 hours.
Before serving, let stand at room temperature for 10 minutes:
1 pint vanilla ice cream
Mash the ice cream in a bowl and let stand until soft and fluffy but not soupy. Meanwhile, drain the strawberries and remove to a glass serving bowl (save the juice for breakfast). Add and toss until blended:
5 to 6 tablespoons orange liqueur
1/4 cup powdered sugar
Fold the ice cream and whipped cream together until blended. Pile in the center of the strawberries and serve at once.
